Sewing Staples: The Green Tee

Its fun to sew fancy clothing, with intricate details and a big wow factor. But that’s not what I wear on a daily basis. What I wear on a daily basis, are T shirts. Sure, I could buy an ill fitting and poorly constructed one at target for $15, but it would fall apart after one season, and be made of low quality fabric, probably by starving children in a third world country. OR, I can spend 30 minutes in my sewing room, have a ball, and whip up a Green Tee every chance I get!

I’ve made two versions so far, but I have a pile of fabric sitting on my cutting table for a dozen more.

My first Green Tee is made from rayon spandex from Pretty Posh Prints. You may have seen a sneak peek when I sewed up my Moxi shorts here– it was so hard to keep it a secret!

When I first got this fabric in the mail, I almost re sold it, concerned it would look too much like grandma’s couch. I’m so glad I kept it, because after I sewed it up and tried it on I fell in love! Maybe grandma was more stylish than I thought!

If you’re new to V-necks- don’t overlook this option! Angelyn’s instructions are top notch, and I love the video on Hey June’s website here as well. It takes a little practice, but nothing compares to the satisfaction of a good pointy “V”. If you chicken out, the scoop is pretty awesome too.

My second version is in a grey modal from Knitpop. While it lacks the pizazz of a floral or printed fabric, this drapey heathered grey is a perfect wardrobe staple. The modal was much easier to wrangle than rayon spandex (which I love to wear but hate to sew!), and is like heaven against my skin.

I actually used the wrong side of the fabric for this tee- on accident! I spent a good 10 minutes getting my “V” to line up perfectly, only to find that it was sewn on to the wrong side of the fabric. I wasn’t about to rip out that beauty, so I cut apart the shoulders, re-sewed them, and used the wrong side as the right side for the rest of my project. As it turns out, I really love the look- it gives it a more worn in vibe than the slightly shiny right side. In the words of Tim Gunn, I “made it work”!
