I’m terribly late with my bee box posting- all these family vacations and fun-in–the-sun summer activities have really distracted me from my sewing room lately!
But, I finally got a chance to dive into my Bee Box and figured out what to make. When the fabrics first arrived, I loved the sinfully soft feel but was a bit challenged by what to make with them (there is always a pattern suggestion and a discount code included, but I’m too independent to take the hint!), as I don’t usually have the best luck sewing with lightweight, sweatery fabrics.
However, an upcoming trip to the coast spiked my interest in sewing cooler weather clothing, and the colors in my box reminded me of Glass Beach in Fort Bragg, CA (read about it here). Using this inspiration, I decided to hack the Green Tee into a cardigan, and use the seafoam colored knit for a breezy tank to layer underneath.
I followed Jen’s tutorial (of Grainline patterns), adapting it for use with the Green Tee (sewn before HERE and hacked HERE – don’t have the Green Tee by Greenstyle Creations? Grab the code from their Facebook group and get it for FREE!)
This was a surprisingly easy hack, and I adore the cascading front of this cardigan and the close fit and cut of the back (so many flowy cardigans just seem to swamp my small frame).
Since the Green Tee only comes with short sleeves, I had to lengthen the sleeves for this to work, but that was a simple matter of extending the lines to the right length.
One yard of the grey sweater knit was not enough for the entire cardigan, so I paired it with a very drapey light grey ribbed knit from my stash (no idea where it came from!). I knew hemming it would be a challenge, so I used knit stay tape on all the hemmed edges to limit the tunneling on my coverstitch, and to great success! I’m buying that stuff in bulk from now on! Many people also swear by steam a seam 2 for stabilizing hems on lightweight fabrics.
The seafoam green knit was made into a Lago Tank (see my previous Lago here), another great free pattern. You can grab it from the Itch to Stitch website here. That means this entire outfit (sans the $250 jeans- a girl’s gotta have a little indulgence here and there) was made with FREE patterns!
This material is slightly sheer, but with a nude colored bra underneath and the cardigan layered on top, I feel comfortable venturing out of the house. Almost too comfortable- like wearing stylish pajamas. But I’m not complaining!
