Another Waterfall Raglan (or why you should sew with real pants on!)

I finally got around to sewing up another Chalk and Notch waterfall raglan (remember this vezrsion I sewed last spring?). All summer long I meant to get around to another one, but one project or another kept cutting in line, and I almost forgot- until this gorgeous metallic jersey from Sly Fox landed at my doorstep (what? you don’t have fabric that magically jumps in your cart and then totally denies its presence?)

The colors of this fabric are just perfect for me- blush and gold, slightly sheer but opaque enough that I don’t need to wear a cami underneath (which I often do anyway, so I don’t show off my belly button while I’m nursing, but it’s nice to have the option). I knew it would make the perfect holiday top, but I dithered about which pattern to use for a while, until I finally remembered my promise to make another waterfall.

Last time, I was working with a really limited quantity of fabric, and so my sleeves ended up elbow length, and the ruffle on the waterfall ended up being some wide chiffon trim- but this time I had enough to cut the pattern as drafted, and I was looking forward to it!

I cut a size 0, my measured size, and it fit well through the shoulders but I felt overwhelmed by the extra volume in the bodice. I think that being short, all that extra volume just tends to make me look wide, which is not as flattering as it would be on someone tall, where the volume gets distributed over a longer torso.

Fortunately, this was an easy fix: I took the bodice in 6 inches (3 on each side), put on some real pants ( one of the hazards of sewing in your PJs, is that everything is going to look like a nightgown) and was immediately much happier!

I think the trick to this pattern is getting the gathers to look even- check out my video tutorial on gathering with your serger for a quick and easy method!

Now I have a top that’s perfect for all those holiday parties (okay…most of the parties I attend involve little people and gingerbread houses rather than champagne, but now I’ve got a reason to throw an adult party!) and that makes me feel fancy!

What are you sewing for the holidays?
