Sedimentary Sews

Hello sewing friends!

I’m back today to share some more sewing makes and family photos, but instead of the ocean, this time we are focusing on the desert!

There are so many amazing desert places to visit, and despite spending quite a bit of time in the Southwest, I feel like we’ve barely scratched the surface. Some of our favorite National Parks are in the desert, including Joshua Tree, Arches, Great Sand Dunes, White Sands, Saguaro, the Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce. I never get tired of looking at the landscape when we drive through Arizona or Utah- the colors embedded in all the different layers seem to pour across the landscape, painting the canyons with swirls of sediment.

So, of course when my kids saw these desert prints from Sew Dynamic Fabrics, they were all over it.

I let them pick their favorite patterns, and the doll (Clarabelle) even got in on the action.

Noah chose the Nico Tee from Jalie, which has always been a great fit for him with his wide shoulders. I feel like I’m tracing off a new size every time I make this, but the fit is always great as long as I remember to re-measure! The kids grows inches overnight, I’m telling you!

Oliver prefers a standards sleeve to a raglan, so we went with the classic Jalie 2918 Men’s Tee. He just grows up, not out, so I generally just have to add a couple inches of length to a previous size if he’s shot up a bit.

Sophia got another A-Line version of the Peekaboo Melanie dress, in knee length.

Her doll is wearing the same pattern but in the 3 month size (it’s a 20″ Cabbage Patch, and smells sooooo good!).

All of these patterns are T-N-T (tried and true), and so I took my time on the details, reverse coverstitching most of the seams to make them last. I love the way the gold thread pairs with these colors. They are all made with the jersey base- I love this for tees and dresses- it’s soft, stretchy, and has a little drape to it.

I made the mistake of encouraging the boys to laugh a little during this photo-shoot- and suddenly their giggles couldn’t stop! I love these goofballs!

I’m so thankful for their friendship.

Outtakes…

How do you get 3 kids to jump at the same time? Photoshop.

It took quite a bit of negotiation to get her out of her unicorn socks, but I love her face here!

Travel Updates

We’ve been spending more time in the same areas lately, which means we’ve had the opportunity to try a few new things and re-kindle some things the kids used to be involved in.

Oliver used to fence competitively, but his club got shut down in California during COVID. We found a camp for him in Miami, and he had a blast fencing for a week!

The boys also got a chance to go up in an airplane with the EAA Young Eagles Program! This is an incredible program that encourages kids to get curious about flying and engineering. It was a little daunting putting two of my children in a small plan with a perfect stranger, but they all had a blast, and can’t wait to do it again.

I don’t have any good photos of it, but Sophia has been able to get into gymnastics a bit as well- she loves performing and practices her cartwheels and handstands whenever she can.

What’s your favorite spot in the desert? Drop me a comment and help me add some more “must see” pins to my ever-evolving google map!

I’ll be back with another sewing post soon, but for now, thanks for reading and following along! If you haven’t already subscribed, you can do that here.
