Spring Kids Clothes!

I havne’t done many strike offs for a while, but I recently had the opportunity to sew up some fabrics for Peekaboo, and I jumped on it, knowing it would motivate me to sew some cute things for my kids for the spring season.

And, since part of the point of this blog is to document my sewing adventures, I couldn’t leave them out, so here we are!

The first thing I made was a pair of rash guards using my TNT boys raglan pattern, the Jalie Nico and the sharks swim fabric. In all honestly I really like this swim fabric- its thinner and has better drape than other custom swim knits, which makes it easy to work with and more comfortable to wear. I did receive the fabric for free, in exchange for photographing and sewing it, but my opinions are my own 🙂

I made the first one basic- white sleeves with sharks on the front and back.

The white is actually supplex- but I figured since swim and athletic fabrics are used so interchangeably these days, I’d give it a try and see how it holds up to the water!

The second rashie I decided to do a little extra hacking and coverstitching detail, and I love the result!

I changed up the order of construction to account for the side panels, and set my sleeves in the round, so I could coverstitch all those seams down.

My boys often complain that tight fitting shirts rub against them, so I am hoping this extra time spent helps make them more comfortable. They also don’t like things super tight, so I made these in their regular size. By the time we get to summer, they will have grown, and these will be perfect for swimming.

They were very patient, posing in the pool, even though it was not heated and threatening rain outside- and of course they were compensated for their trouble! #bloggerkidlife

The third item I made was using the “Wild and Free” panel- as soon as this arrived at my door my son Noah claimed it, since it’s pretty much is mantra in life.

As homeschoolers, we encourage as much outside time as possible, and I see their time spent in nature as just as valuable as the time spent on math and reading. Noah especially loves animals, and dreams of owning a farm someday, so I was happy to make him something that spoke to his sensibilities.

I used the Fighter Tee from the Handmade Boy– kindly shared with my by Kelly, who designed it to serve as a fund raising effort for her St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

I’ve experienced the pain and financial strain of having kids in the hospital, so I admire her efforts to do something to help families who find themselves in this situation, and need a little bit of help and hope. You can grab the pattern here, if you want to help out too!

I love the color blocking on the sleeves and sides- and I made the most of it with a grey stripe cotton lycra from Peekaboo and a denim “jegging” knit. I had originally intended the jegging fabric to be a pair of actual leggings, but quickly discovered that it has too much drape and not enough opacity for my taste, but are perfect for a tee!

Here’s Noah’s fighter pose- I think he does it pretty well, don’t you? He did survive being born two months early as a twin and has come through with flying colors, so he’s totally my fighter!

He’s also wearing the Love Notions Thomas Track Pants, which he also love (check out that pattern review here).

Princess couldn’t be left out, and I had the perfect panel for her- a pretty unicorn floral!

This panel was nice and long, and I was able to get a dress length Violet Dress out of it, using coordinates from my stash for the sides and pockets.

Speaking of which, we seem to have found the key to getting her to pose for photos- POCKETS! She loves finding them, hiding things in them, and putting her hands there, which works out great for me! So if everything you see her in from now on has pockets- you’ll know why!

I’m glad I had this opportunity to try a few new things and patterns, and to beef up my kids wardrobe for spring! What are you sewing your kids for spring/summer? What are their favorites?
