Mommy and Me Peplums!

I’m not a big dress person (see my explanation in the 2017 hits and misses post), but the onset of fall has me thinking about the holidays, and I thought it might be nice to have a new “statement” dress in my closet, so I hopped on board the Peekaboo Melbourne Dress test last week.

I had intended to make the dramatic, fishtail version, and even knew exactly what fabric I’d use, but when I pulled it off the shelf, I discovered a large flaw in the middle of my piece, dashing my plans, and requiring that I pick another option that required less yardage.

A smaller piece of double-brushed poly from Pretty Posh Prints (purchased sometime last year… I really should keep better track! Anyone have a good fabric management/recording system?) caught my eye, and I decided I had just enough for a peplum version of the crossover dress for me, with just enough left over to make at matching Melanie top for the Princess.

The top came together quickly and easily, and surprised me by not needing any adjustments to fit my smaller-than-average bust. There’s no extra fabric below the chest, and the band holds the fabric quite securely against my body, eliminating any chance of an accidental peep-show.

I wasn’t certain how I’d like the peplum on me, but I knew I’d love the crossover front for nursing, which is still an important consideration in my wardrobe these days.

It turns out that I’m quite pleased with where the peplum hits on my body- I think when I’ve tried this style before, I’ve over-adjusted it so that it hits at the smallest part of my waist, resulting in a slightly maternity look when it poofs out over my belly. On this top, the peplum hits slightly lower, which means the skirt portion falls straight down- much more flattering!

I made the Princess a matching Melanie dress in peplum length- we have a half dozen or so of these in her closet, and I love how adorable she looks in them! She refused to take any individual shots during our photo session, because she got distracted by filling her pockets with rocks, but we were able to snap a couple mommy and me photos before she lost interest.

Look at that grin!

I just love when she lets me put a bow in her hair!

Both of these makes will get plenty of wear this season, and I’m happy to have discovered the “secret of the peplum”!
