Portlander Shorts Hack!

Counting how many Portlander pants I have is a bit like asking me how old I am…I’m pretty sure I’m over 35, but unless I do the math, I can’t *quite* remember by how much 😉

That’s totally OK though, because it gives me the freedom to sew a few more pairs- and since I’m concentrating on beefing up my summer wardrobe, it seemed like a good time to break out the shorts version again.

It’s all in the details…

You can check out my pair from last summer here (would you believe how small Princess was?) they are great casual shorts, perfect for popping on over a swimsuit. This time, however, I wanted something a bit more practical for everyday wear, so I added back pockets, rivets, and triple topstitching.

The fabric for these is a premium athletic knit from Surge (click the link for a 10% off coupon)- I can’t get enough of their stuff lately, and this fabric went straight from the washing machine (I pre wash all my fabrics as soon as they come in, so I don’t have to worry about it later) to my cutting table.

The rivets are double cap rivets from Joanns- I actually prefer these to the denim rivets I used on my Ginger jeans, because they are easier to install correctly and have a nice polished look on both sides.

How I’ll wear them:

These shorts fit me like a glove, and will get plenty of use this summer, particularly for hiking. The tall, fitted waistband means they won’t ride down while I’m wearing a toddler on my back, which is a common and highly irritating problem with jeans, and they’ll dry quickly if they get wet, thanks to the athletic fabric.

In this photo, I’m wearing them with one of my Lago tanks- another simple favorite that’s bound to get re-made several times this summer. You can see my pattern review of the Lago here.

You also might want to check out my review of several FREE tank patterns in this post– I love to sew and compare patterns, but the Lago is still one of my favorites!

If you haven’t sewn Portlander’s yet, you really need to- there are several patterns that have come out recently that look similar, and I can tell you, this die-hard researcher isn’t a bit tempted to try them- that’s how much I love this pattern!

I have had the Portlander pattern for months and still not made anything from it. Maybe shorts will be a good place to start!
