The Sisterhood of the Traveling Fabric….

I’m not the type of person that usually plans ahead a lot…in real life, you’ll usually find me running late to church, dashing to the store at the last minute for a family dinner or picking up decorations for tomorrow’s birthday party at midnight (thank goodness for 24 hour stores!).

But, when it comes to sewing, sometimes the nature of testing means I actually churn out some items ahead of time to prep for a coming season- and I’m always so glad I did!

In this case, I had the opportunity to test the Mae Sweater by the DIBY Club, which turned out to be a whole bunch of yummy sweater-y goodness, just waiting in my closet for the first sub-70 degree day. (I live in California, so that might be another few months, but still! I’m prepared!)

The Mae has all the elements of a fantastic fall or winter staple- a huge cowl neck that could almost be a hood (see my silly picture below!), plenty of volume (to hide the consequences of all those holiday treats!), and a length that’s just perfect for wearing with leggings (my other winter staple, preferably in a fleece backed fabric)!

The Fabric Story!

I chose to make my Mae up in a beautiful lightweight, ribbed sweater knit from Cali Fabrics- purchased back when I met up with a group of bloggers last December (which was seriously SO. Much. Fun!)

We all found and adored this fabric, and joked that we would create the “sisterhood of the traveling fabric”, showcasing it on our blogs in different iterations. I know Mac (of Harper and Lu) has already stitched hers up into a lovely Blackwood Cardigan (check out here post here!), but I’m not sure who else has sewn it up yet!

I bet as winter nears you’ll be seeing more of this pop up, and if I can snag a few more yards, I’ll certainly do it- it feels like wearing a fuzzy grey cloud!

Styling Tips!

I think the key to rocking an oversized top like this is balance- wear something fitted on bottom (like my skinny jeans, or a pair of leggings), add a long necklace that elongates your torso (this one was from Target), and pair of cute booties to finish it off (birthday hint- cough cough)!

I was careful to shorten the top a bit for my height (DIBY gives excellent instructions for this in the pattern)- any longer, and it might not have looked as flattering and might have overwhelmed my frame.

I’m really please to add this to the “fall” side of my closet (anyone else organize their clothes by season?), and I know the locals will see me wearing it a lot this season!

Thanks for checking out my blog post! You can find more of my makes on Facebook, and I’d love it if you took a moment to subscribe, so you can get posts delivered to your inbox almost as soon as they’re written!

Is this done in long sleeves, or 3/4?

This looks really nice and the styling tips are fab too. I’ll have to see if I have enough yardage of something in my stash for this pattern. I’m curious, what kind of church do you attend?
    Lovely setting, by the way.
