Velvet Crush

I took my family out shopping last weekend, and I kept running into velvet tee shirts- over and over and over. In Old Navy, Target, Gap….they were everywhere. I’m not always one to follow the trends (or let go of them when they’re long past!), but something about the romantic, wintry vibe just resonated with me, and I knew I had to re create the look.

I chose my TNT (tried-and-true) V neck t shirt pattern, the Green Tee (get it free with a code from the Greenstyle Facebook group!), and set to work. The Green tee only comes with a short sleeve option, but lengthening the sleeves is easy, and I knew I wanted fuller coverage since I HATE having cold arms.

I used a crushed velvet fabric from my San Francisco fabric warehouse binge- its a shimmery greenish/silver- impossible to capture in photos but really pretty nonetheless. Unfortunately, in my haste to fulfill my inspiration, I neglected to make sure I was cutting the velvet the right way- I made sure all the pieces were cut consistently, but the softness is only if you pet the shirt going UP, instead of DOWN.

As bummed as I am about this obvious error, I still love the tee, and plan to wear the heck out of it this winter. But next time, I’m checking the nap. Speaking of which, my baby hadn’t taken one (or slept at night really) in five days when I made this, so there’s my flimsy #momlife excuse.

And this is how photos get done folks- with a sucker and a smile. Hard to believe she’s made a career out of keeping her parents up 24/7, huh?

I too like the smooth running down. But my mom always made it the way you did. She said it gave the richest color when you ran your hands down it.

Love this! I just got the pattern and am excited to try out velvet! How did you go about adding the extra length to make the long sleeves?

Thank you! I used another long sleeve t shirt pattern to estimate how much longer I needed and then extended the line at the same angle. Don’t forget hem allowances!
