Tested: Greenstyle Studio to Street Top

I’ve made a half dozen dolman patterns in the last couple years, and I’ve loved each more than the last. There’s something classic but stylish about a dolman, and oh, so many endless ways they can changed up to suit my whims…my sewing hacker heart is in heaven anytime a new dolman comes around.

Until last week, my favorite “Dolman on the Block” was the New Horizons Dublin Dolman (blogged here)- the short sleeved version was a staple in last year’s summer wardrobe, but for some odd reason, I never got around to making the long sleeved iteration for winter.

So, of course, I was overjoyed when Greenstyle announced their plans to develop a Dolman (with options for all the seasons!), and couldn’t wait to see what new and unique spin Greenstyle would put on the classic style.

The result is the Studio to Street Top- the most perfect oversized, but not too slouchy, top that spans the gap between wardrobe staple and stand out statement piece, all wrapped in the delicious comfort of a knit top (my favorite kind).

Aptly named, the Studio to Street literally takes you from the studio as a pre/post workout coverup (okay, that would be my bedroom, since i have all my exercise equipment at home now- yay Peloton! Still, a girls’ gotta look stylish, even at home!) to the streets of downtown (maybe on a girls night? I need more of those!)

I have two versions and three ways of styling them to share over the next couple days, but for today I’m showcasing a fancier look, using the front V neck and back Crew Neck options, with long sleeves.

There are also options within this pattern for a V back, a cropped look, and a long banded view- all excellent and flattering on the testers! I shortened this one about 2″ for my height, which I don’t often do for tops, but felt was necessary to get the proportions right.

The batwing on this sets it apart from many other dolmans out there, and is just the right amount of “wing”. I’ve previously tried another popular batwing dolman pattern, and it overwhelmed my small frame. This one is perfect for me- and the tight sleeves really balance out the loose body.

One of my favorite features is that little upward curve at the front- its perfect for tucking into jeans! Did you know that this is called a “french tuck”? I hadn’t ever heard the term, but I like how it keeps it looking clean and casual! The back curved hem is also perfect for keeping your assets covered in a pair of leggings!

The fabric is a rayon cupro knit that I sourced from Bow Button Fabrics, and it has the most amazing sand washed texture and drape. Pro-Tip: Its important to choose a fabric with some drape for this pattern, so you don’t end up feeling like a quadrilateral- stiff fabrics like Cotton Lycra will just hang, and won’t be as flattering (no offense to the fabric awesomeness that is Cotton Lycra! You just gotta get a little more sophisticated for this one).

When I ordered it, I was a little worried that it would blend in too much with my skin tone, but after sewing it up I’ve decided its the perfect shade of neutral, and matches about 5 necklaces that I have (I must reeeallly like pink necklaces)!
