Swim, Swim!

There were alot of things on my list to make before we head out on a few camping trips this summer, but near the top was a swimsuit for my daughter.

At 2 years old, she’s a beast in the pool and the ocean alike, demanding “swim, swim!” every time her little eyes spot a body of water deep enough for her to splash around in. She’s by far the most adventurous of my three children in the water, and I knew I would get alot of joy out of watching her paddle around in a hand-made suit.

(those ruffles! Be still my heart!)

I made several suits for her last year (check them out here and here), but she’s grown out of all of them, and I was looking for a simple, practical, and feminine option for this year’s adventures. The Mairin swimsuit by Sew A Little Seam seemed like the perfect choice. I’ve made several of Kelly’s patterns before, and I’m always impressed by her drafting and attention to detail.

I chose a swimsuit panel set from Peekaboo Fabrics from my stash, and got to work. Less than 24 hours later, I had a perfectly fitting swimsuit for my sweet girl! She was delighted, and of course saw this as a perfect opportunity to ask for her favorite activity (I didn’t see that coming…LOL)

Fit wise, I found the Mairin pretty true to size- Princess wears a 24 month in RTW, and I chose to sew the 2T. I shortened the straps a tiny bit, but other than that, the suit fits her well with a bit of room to grow, which I feel is appropriate in a children’s garment.

The techniques and options were well laid out, and easy to follow- in fact, I liked it so much, I also bought the women’s version, which I’ll be sewing soon as part of a sew-along in The Fabric Fairy Group on Facebook (lead by fellow blogger, Stephanie Allen).

If you’re interested in sewing a swimsuit this summer, for yourself or your daughter, please join us HERE (starts 6/25)! The Mairin has plenty of options for everyone, and is a really satisfying sew, and one I can see myself coming back to time and again as she grows!

Love his option for little girls! I am just wanting something that has bottoms that cover more than traditional swimwear for my 5’6, not yet 12 year old daughter. Talk about legs for miles!
