Sunday Fun-Day!

Being a homeschooling family, my kids don’t totally understand the concept of a weekend. Although our rhythms change slightly, they learn year-round, every day of the week. That’s not to say we do formal academics 365 days of the year- but we are always learning, and rarely have to get up and be somewhere by 8AM, so the weekends tend to look fairly similar to the week days for us.

And thank goodness, because I’m about as pleasant in the morning as an angry badger. Fortunately, now I have a couple new Sunday cardigans to ease me into the day! As an added bonus, they also pull double duty as chic work-wear when I have to drag myself out of my comfy clothes and into some real pants, and are perfect for running errands, which feels like it’s pretty much my life these days (anyone else feel like a taxi sometimes!?)

For this striped version, I used a “designer” french terry from the Fab Clique (if it looks familiar, its because I also used this fabric for my Uvita top, which released earlier this week). This fabric is a nice mid weight, and has a fabulous drape, which I think is essential to the look of this cardigan.

You could, theoretically, use something heavier like a sweatshirt fleece if it had the required stretch, but it would look boxy and wouldn’t move with you as well. For this cardy, I chose the knee length hooded version, with the regular size pockets, and plain cuffs.

I’m in love with the pockets- the regular size ones are plenty big for your phone, and the larger size gives a nice slouchy look. Either way, super cozy and a perfect spot to warm up your hands when your Starbucks runs out.

I meant to sew the high side slit, but I got so focused on matching up my stripes that I forgot and sewed the side completely closed! No adjustments were made for my height, which is shorter than Greenstyle drafts for by 5″, because I wanted a length between the knee length and duster length on the pattern, but I did narrow my sleeves slightly since I tend to have rather skinny arms, which is a typical adjustment for me.

The lace up cuffs are one of the stand out features on this pattern, and I’ve got them on my list to make soon. In fact, I think they would look awesome added to the Green Tee, or the Centerfield Raglan as well!

My second Sunday Cardigan was made from fabric I found at JoAnns and couldn’t resist (go in for a pack of needles, come out with $50 in sweaterknit…sound familiar?).

I love the ombre look of this fabric- and chose to sew the version with the side slit, oversize pockets, and without the hood this time.

At first, I wasn’t in love with the colors on me, but hte more I’ve worn it the more I’ve come to appreciate the colors- the cardigan makes my jeans and a tee momiform much more interesting, and keeps me warm and cozy as well.

It’s also got some fun swing!

Many people will probably be wondering what the differences are between the Sunday and the Capsule Cardigan, so put together a brief summary of each, along with this side by side picture of two of mine. Fair warning: you might just end up deciding you need both! (Capsule on Left, Sunday on Right)

Capsule:

  • Requires 20% two way stretch
  • Large scoop pockets
  • Hip or tunic length
  • Finished with bands
  • Regular cuffs or hemmed sleeve

Sunday:

  • Requires 50% two way stretch
  • Regular or Large patch pockets
  • Knee or full length
  • High or low side slit
  • Turned under finish
  • Lace up or regular cuffs or hemmed sleeve
  • Optional hood

I had a little photo background identity crisis when we were shooting the Sunday- I like to vary my backgrounds depending on my mood, the fabric/pattern and the weather. I’d love your input on which is your favorite!

Oh, and I also put together a Pinterest board for the cardigan here, if you need some fabric/styling inspiration. If you enjoyed this post, don’t forget to follow me on Instagram so we can stay connected!

I love your cardigans! They look wonderful. I just made the boyfriend cardigan and am wearing it all the time. πŸ™‚ The angry badger comment made me laugh. I also home school my four kids and am not a morning person. I found for a white elephant Christmas gift a heat changing mug that is a bear going “grrr” until you put the hot coffee in and then he’s saying “ahhh”. I’m hoping I can get it! πŸ™‚ Enjoy your morning in your new cardi’s!

I was loving your style and didn’t notice the background! Like either one of the brick backgrounds.
